چکیده
OBJECTIVE This review sought to determine the strength of the scientific evidence relating to the therapeutic use of hyperbaric oxygen for traumatic brain injury or stroke. In order to reduce the possibility of omitting relevant human clinical trials, parallel searches of the Medline, HealthStar and Embase databases were undertaken, and input was sought from local experts in hyperbaric medicine as well as from a widely noted proponent of this therapy. Papers retrieved were reviewed to ensure that they reported the results of comparative clinical trials and were then reviewed by a panel of scientists. Papers were scrutinized for methodological flaws, and the clinical significance of the results was examined. OUTCOME The strongest papers indicated either no effect or harm from hyperbaric oxygen when used to treat traumatic brain injuries or strokes. CONCLUSION The scientific literature up to August 2001 does not support the use of hyperbaric oxygen for traumatic brain injuries and strokes.

Background and aims: The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the treatment methods to treat many diseases and injuries such as decompression sickness, wound healing, carbon monoxide poisoning, thermal burns, and nervous system injuries. This article aims to review the possible mechanisms of the effectiveness of this treatment in neurological injuries according to the available studies...
متن کاملReflections on the neurotherapeutic effects of hyperbaric oxygen.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke are the major causes of brain damage and chronic neurological impairments. There is no agreed-upon effective metabolic intervention for TBI and stroke patients with chronic neurological dysfunction. Clinical studies published this year present convincing evidence that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) might be the coveted neurotherapeutic method for brain ...
متن کاملAll the right moves: the need for the timely use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for treating TBI/CTE/PTSD
BACKGROUND The modern age of hyperbaric medicine began in 1937; however, today few know about hyperbaric oxygen's effects on the body and medical conditions outside of diving medicine and wound care centers - a serious ethical issue as there are 20 US military veterans committing suicide every day directly related to Traumatic Brain Injury/Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The problem is not whet...
متن کاملBibliography UPDATE: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Policy Issue: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are signature injuries among Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF). Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) has been used to treat certain injuries (e.g., dive-related injuries, soft tissue injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning). Recently, it has been proposed as treatment for individuals with...
متن کاملTraumatic Brain Injury Has Not Prominent Effects on Cardiopulmonary Indices of Rat after 24 Hours: Hemodynamic, Histopathology, and Biochemical Evidence
Background: Accidents are the second reason for mortality and morbidity in Iran. Among them, brain injuries are the most important damage. Clarification of the effects of brain injuries on different body systems will help physicians to prioritize their treatment strategies. In this study, the effect of pure brain trauma on the cardiovascular system and lungs 24 hours post trauma was assessed. M...
